As you read these three definitions, The definition “niche” we are looking for is the third one “A Distinct Segment of a Market”.  Which rises the question what is your Distinct Segment of the Internet Market going to be?  Who is your “audience” going to be.  After all, you will be inviting people to your niche world.

Simply put, a ‘niche” is a group of people.

The first question to be asked is, “What is Your Passion”?   What do you think about all day and look forward to dong?  Sometimes, life gets in the way, and there are things you have to do.  The question is, “What are you “looking forward to doing after you finish all of those mundane tasks?  Mundane things like the eight to five work day or having to come home and cook dinner for the family.   You should choose your niche from something that you are passionate about.  It could be a hobby, a need or a want.  You can make money off of each niche as  there are thousands of people searching and looking for information on every niche everyday.

When you choose your niche, you want to avoid being too broad in your choice of niche.  For instance, you might be into “health” and want to do a blog about that.  However, that is much to broad of a niche.  You need to narrow it down into a smaller group of people.  Yes, a smaller group of people looking for information.  They are looking for specific information.  you could narrow it to a much smaller niche such as “health for people over sixty” or “Health for families”.  See how you can narrow it down?

What group of people would you like to reach?  Evidently you have this passion and knowledge to share.  You want to target this smaller audience and reach out to them.  There are over two billion people searching the internet.  You can NOT sell to all of them.  You want to speak out to your specific group of people.

  1. I like your approach to looking at a niche as a group of people. I haven’t thought of that before and I think it really helps you narrow down specifically who you are focusing on when you choose a niche and when you write about different topics associated with that niche.

    I also agree that you shouldn’t over think your niche since it should be something your are passionate about. I think that if you aren’t passionate about the niche you choose, it will be hard to keep the motivation going on your topic and you may loose interest quickly.

You have really captured the meaning when you say that a niche can be based on my own interests and something I like to do when I get home from work. I see now that if I am writing about something I love, I will be more successful. Thank you for clarifying that!

  5. The best way to define your niche is what is your passion? Yes I agree. You have to have a passion for something and then build a website around it.
